HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Blue Star or Gone Too Far?

Category: Firearms

Welcome everyone to the 127th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the bomber betty-themed AR-15 was fudd crap.

At this time the original auction remains up on GunBroker with no bids on the auction.  We can only hope this retro-themed AR-15 can find its way to a new home in the near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a Blue Star Edition SIG 550 chambered in .223/5.56. As is tradition, this imported blue gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $5,750 Current Bid with No Reserve.

Selling this very rare imported gat is GunBroker seller Ohio Ordnance Works, Inc., located in Chardon OH.  Let’s see what they had to say about this limited edition SIG 550.

This auction is for one of 20 Blue Star Edition SIG PE 90/550P’s to be imported from SIG Switzerland by JDI/SAN Imports.  JDI/SAN Imports has been importing SIG SAUER A.G. firearms from Switzerland in small batches for the US market for several years. As a result, the number of firearms available are extremely low making this pistol highly sought after and uncommon to find.

The SIG PE90/550p uses the famously reliable long stroke gas piston operating system.  The pistol is chambered in 5.56mm and can be converted to a rifle by the end user subject to applicable 922r requirements. The SIG 550p features a one-piece barrel design which incorporates the flash hider and the rifle grenade ring. The pistol features HK style front and rear sling attachments built into the firearm. The bayonet mount is complete and located under the front barrel band. The rear sight is the HK style rotary drum sight with night sight inserts and the front sight incorporates a flip-up night sight. The magazine is translucent smoke polymer and features the ability to be linked to other magazines of the same type. The handguard has a factory bipod incorporated just like its military counterpart.  This particular version of the SIG 550p is the rare Blue Star Edition featuring a blue hardened industrial enamel finish with black polymer furniture .  The trigger guard rotates to the side for use with winter gloves. It accepts 30, 20, 10, and 5 round polymer magazines that use a rock and lock system and features a last-round bolt hold open. The pistol grip has a compartment for magazine speed loaders, spare parts, or cleaning kits.  The PE stands for (privaten einsatz) which means private (personal) use.  This PE90 / SIG 550p comes complete with a factory hard case, cleaning kit, one magazine, and the manual.

The manufacturing quality of this firearm is first rate as is the fit and finish. The SIG 550 series are some of the finest military style pistols ever imported into the US.

This firearm was fully manufactured and assembled by the SIG Sauer A.G. factory in Switzerland.

PE90p / SIG 550p indicates that this model came into the country as a pistol.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Blue Star or Gone Too Far?

The SIG 550 series is something I’ve always loved, and I appreciate Ohio Ordnance Works importing this (alongside all the other awesome products they make).  With that said, this blue certainly makes a statement.  One can only hope this blue is akin to getting a Ferrari F40 in the appropriate red, because this is a very bright shade of blue.  We have 922R compliance to thank for the lack of a stock, and I’m sure those aren’t easy to come by nowadays.

Missing stock and color aside, this 550 does have all the cool features you could ever want.  Do I have a need to launch rifle grenades or mount what I’m sure is very hard to find bayonet?  No, but do those features make this gun even cooler?  Absolutely they do.

What’s a specialty Swiss-made SIG 550 worth in this configuration?  This gun is certainly worth a pretty penny in today’s market, but the desirability of this variant remains to be seen.  Whether or not this is a hot gat I of course leave that up to you, the readers, to decide.
